The hanging meat safe.

On my blog I have decided to show kitchen antiques that I own and how I actually use them.

The majority of people buy antiques to look at and admire. So do I but I also like them to be useful in a way that will not degrade them and can be passed onto to my kin for them to do the same. The first one I am going to describe is my “Hanging Meat safe”

here is a picture of it.

As you can see it is wooden (Mahogany) with metal perforated sides and a door that has also a metal perforated insert.

The idea of a hanging meatsafe was to keep it of the floor and make it difficult for dogs vermin and the like from the contents. They were only intended to keep meat in for a short while although “cured” meat could be left in a lot longer. It was also usually hung in a cool area of the kitchen.

My wife bought this particular hanging meat safe from a country antique dealer who wouldn’t part with it until he knew how she was going to use it. Obviously she satisfied hime because he parted with it.

Most hanging meatsafes were mainly made completely from metal and I supposed that the wooden ones were the more upmarket kind.

The dimensions of this safe is 26 inches (66 centimetres) tall, 27 inches (68.5 centimetres) wide and 15 inches (38 centimetres) deep.

What do we use it for?

We use it to house a small microwave oven.One way to use a kitchen antique
