In this article, I discuss the growth of what was called Peoples Art. This is more now named under the more commonly called “collectibles” genre. Collectibles are considered a cheaper collecting version of antique collecting. “Peoples Art” is the art depicted on containers.
Your tea caddy and all sorts of packaging the type of which have become highly collectable. The showing of items that was contained in a container was seen as vulgar and the thought of anyone seeing what brand you were serving, very low class. The thought anyone seeing that you were providing them with Kellogg’s Cornflakes that morning would horrify the majority of people. These kinds of facts were usually kept from guests in the more upper class households, which it was almost odd, by standards of today. Upper class household would most probably put them in some sort of no-name container before serving the guests. These days’s people don’t care what is displayed with the logos of the manufacturers displayed at random. The fact that a recognisable logo cannot be seen devalues the product. The brand recognisability of anything marks items nowadays of a worthwhile collectable, which has created a growing market in brand memorabilia. The old advertising material is now completely and strongly collectable and enthusiasts have an almost unlimited a field of play of which to begin their collections. This collecting started with posters adorning walls of students and teenagers but now old ones have become extremely collectable in their own right. These old posters can command very high sums of money sums depending on their condition and the content of the posters.
Cans and the packing are strongly sort after articles. The special articles of promotion such as ashtrays, ventilators, boxes of money, puzzles and pens are also the extremely popular items.
Advertising materials are now considered works of art. Commercial art being the people’s art, which is now fun to collect and display around the house
If you were thinking to collect a brand or category, the best thing would be to look for something that will last.
British brands have been around for a very long time, so there are masses of items to be found out there Just think of all the tea caddies, Bushels tea and all the things like HP Sauce (been around since 1870), Lyle’s golden syrup etc.
The next time that you think of throwing all those old containers of your grandmas out, just take another look you may have a goldmine of stuff their.
